Welcome to Anime — A Medium Like No Other

Anime is Japanese animation — but calling it "just cartoons" would be a massive understatement. Anime spans every genre imaginable: intense action, heartfelt romance, philosophical sci-fi, terrifying horror, gentle slice-of-life, and everything in between. It's a storytelling medium that takes risks most live-action productions wouldn't dare attempt.

If you're brand new to anime, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to get started confidently.

Step 1: Understand What Anime Actually Is

Anime is not a genre — it's a medium. Just as Hollywood produces both children's films and R-rated thrillers, anime covers the full spectrum of storytelling styles and target audiences:

  • Shonen — targeted at younger males, often action-focused (e.g., Naruto, Demon Slayer)
  • Shojo — targeted at younger females, often romance-focused (e.g., Sailor Moon, Fruits Basket)
  • Seinen — targeted at adult males, often darker or more complex (e.g., Berserk, Vinland Saga)
  • Josei — targeted at adult females, realistic romance and drama (e.g., Nana, Chihayafuru)
  • Kodomomuke — for children (e.g., Doraemon, Pokémon)

Step 2: Find Your Genre

Think about what you enjoy in other media. Your existing tastes are a great guide:

Step 3: Choose Your Language Preference

Anime is available in multiple language formats:

  • Japanese with subtitles (sub) — the original voice performances, considered authentic by many fans
  • Dubbed (dub) — re-recorded in your local language (English, Thai, etc.)
  • Thai subtitles / Thai dub — increasingly available on Thai streaming platforms

Neither format is "better" — it's entirely personal preference. Thai-language fans have great options on AIS Play, TRUE ID, and Netflix Thailand.

Step 4: Pick a Streaming Platform

  • Crunchyroll — the biggest dedicated anime platform globally, free with ads
  • Netflix Thailand — curated anime selection with Thai subtitle support
  • AIS Play — great for Thai-dubbed content
  • TRUE ID — locally focused with seasonal anime

Step 5: Commit to Finishing One Show First

Many beginners hop between shows and never get hooked. Pick one series from our beginner recommendations, watch at least 4–5 episodes, and give it a genuine chance. Most great anime take a couple of episodes to fully establish their world.

You're Ready!

Anime is a lifelong journey of discovery. There's always a new genre to explore, a new story to fall in love with, or a classic to revisit. Welcome to the community — the best episode is always the next one.
